Secondary Market: GM Design legend Bill Mitchell owned this Gotschke for 20 years. Vice President of Styling from 1958 until retirement in 1977, Mitchell was responsible for designs that produced 72 million cars, including the Buick Riviera, Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Cadillac Eldorado, and his personal favorite, the Corvette. His widow donated most of his drawings and paintings to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. A few were kept and this Gotschke sold in 1991 for $22,000.

Painted in 1968, this original watercolor is matted and framed. It portrays Rudolph Caracciola driving a Mercedes-Benz W25A in the 1934 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. It was created to illustrate the Caracciola story in Automobile Quarterly Vol. 7/1. Gotschke then modified it for Mitchell, who received the piece in July, 1968, during his tenure as GM's V.P.

The artist signed it in the lower right hand corner:

"To Bill Mitchell
with Best Greetings
from Walter Gotschke"

Walter Gotschke's widow values the painting at EUR 25,000 - about $32,000.
