Schumacher at Indy

September 24th, 2000: Formula One motor racing returns to America with the inaugural United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Former World Champion Michael Schumacher entered the race eight points ahead of the current Champion, Mika Hakkinen. A quarter of a million fans at 'The Brickyard' saw the German start in pole position on a damp track, and like Coulthard and and his Finnish rival Hakkinen beside him, used wet tires.

Niles Nakaoka's dramatic painting shows Schumacher steering his Ferrari through Turn 13 that day, whilst leading the pack. Though gaining on the leader in second place, Hakkinen was forced to retire with engine failure on Lap 26. At the end of the 73 lap race, Schumacher was victorious, despite spinning with just 5 laps to go! Team mate Rubens Barrichello finished 12 seconds behind to produce a stunning one-two result for Ferrari in America.

This 15th race of the season gave Schumacher a commanding lead in the Championship, which he went on to win his 3rd title.
