1960 Tour de France Automobile

The 250 GT ‘short wheelbase’ of Belgian drivers Willy Mairesse and Georges Berger was victorious in the 1960 GT category of the Tour de France Automobile. The venerable Tour, dating from 1899 in the 'Heroic Age' of the automobile, was first organised by the Automobile Club de France in association with Le Matin. Starting at Nice, the 1960 event featured a roundabout route: Mont Ventoux, Nürburgring, Spa, Montlhéry and Rouen before reaching the finishing line in Clermont Ferrand. Mairesse, one-time Ferrari chief test driver with a reputation for overstepping the limits of racing, later turned to campaigning big sports cars with some success.
