1907 Itala. This car (4 cylinders, 14,432 cc and 120 HP) with the Italian driver Alessandro Cagno won the 'Coppa della Velocita' of Brescia with an average speed of 65 mph over a total race-distance of 300 miles.

Artist Notes:
"I’m always enthralled at reading accounts of those brave and foolhardy individuals who took part in the very first road races. The old black and white film footage can look distinctly comical with the cars careering around corners at impossible speeds but the combination of early technology, poor road surfaces, the wrong animal or human, in the wrong place at the wrong time were the direct cause of too many tragic fatalities. The son of the owner of this particularly magnificent piece of machinery told me how they will use it to drive down to the local supermarket to collect the beer for the barbecue. Its bark is certainly worse than its bite."
