Racing Through the Night
September 11th, 1908: The Brighton Beach 24 Hour Race was held at the motordome in the state of New York -- a one mile oval dirt track. It was won by Ralph Mulford and Harry Cobe in their Lozier at an average speed of 46 mph, after completing 1107 laps in 24 hours.

This painting was created to illustrate an article that Helck wrote for the May 1964 issue of Antique Automobile, in which it is titled The 24 Hour Grinds. It was published again in Helck's Great Auto Races (Abrams, 1975) with the title Racing Through the Night and notation Collection of Walter Gotschke, Stuttgart.

This original 7¾“ x 12¼“ watercolor is painted on 15½“ x 20¼“ stiff cardboard and signed 'H' on the lower right.

It was given to Walter Gotschke two years after creation and dedicated:
