History was made on May 1st, 1955 when Stirling Moss won the 1,000 mile Mille Miglia (from Brescia to Rome and back), becoming the first and only British driver to achieve victory in one of the world's most challenging races. At his side was motor racing writer and navigator Denis 'Jenks' Jenkinson who, immediately after the race, wrote a detailed 4,500 word story on the race, complete with full results, from his hotel room. This duo set the fastest ever time for the course at an average speed of nearly 98mph - a record that was never broken. As Jenkinson said after previous Mille Miglias: "He who wins the Mille Miglia is some driver, and the car he uses is some sportscar."

Artist Notes:
"The 1955 Mille Miglia: Stirling Moss thunders toward the Grand Hotel in his legendary 300 SLR #722. The famous sea front hotel has been the the set of many movies, such as Fellini's Amarcord."
