Delahaye in Death Valley
Original painting was displayed at the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California.
Artist Notes:
"Originally built for the 1939 World's Fair in New York, this 1939 Delahaye Type 165 was kept by the US Customs until the end of the Second World War. Designed by the French coachbuilders Figoni & Falaschi, only two of these roadsters were ever made. The first time I set eyes on this Beauty Queen of all cars I knew I had to do a painting of it. I had already been commissioned by Peter Mullin to paint his blue Delahaye but this one was truly compulsive. I had to do it my way. I tracked it down at a Concours where I was showing my paintings. The setting had to be non intrusive but beautiful. Sand dunes came to mind. I drove with a friend to Death Valley. Before dawn we climbed 700ft. I dressed in a silk satin robe with a leopard parasol and hat etc. I took photos of the vista and my friend took photos of me. The whole composition was in my head. The dunes complemented the Delahaye. Then the leopard bed sheet completed the affair."
